The 3rd Annual Malibu Invitational came to an end on Sunday with stacked finals, glassy little lines, and perfect beach weather.
Our great and emotional weekend started at Duke’s Malibu Friday Night where Josh Morgan fed roughly 175 guests with unreal entree’s and appetizers and quenched our thirst with Wine from Chateau Ste Michelle Wine Estates, Vodka from Stockholm Krystal Vodka, and a plethora of Hawaii’s Finest and Original PRIMO Beer. We had tunes from DJ Jacques and Terraplane and throughout the party our guests were bidding on our great silent auction items from Jeff Ransenberg, DVS, VonZipper, RVCA, Quiksilver, Gatorade, O’neill, Rusty, DC, SkullCandy, Matix, Vestal, Volcom, Vans, Body Glove, Steven Lippman Print and Film, Nixon, Billabong, Spy, Lost, Hurley, Mike D from the Beastie Boys, Ian Zamora Surfboards, PRIMO Beer, Katie Costello Jewelry, Anthony Bevilacqua, Bill Parr, and Your Los Angeles Lakers. All proceeds from the Silent Auction went to our young Lyon Herron who is heroically battling a rare genetic disease called Garners Syndrome. Lyon Herron is the purpose of our Malibu Invitational which was born to raise the funds he needs to get the vaccinations he needs and to create Awareness of this extremely rare disease. Two of our fine Malibu Citizens actually bought items from the Auction for Lyon as a double gift; Andy Lyon bought Lyon a Body Glove Full Suit and Debby Frank bought Lyon a Signed Andy Irons board Courtesy of Billabong. Last but not least we premiered The Allen Sarlo Documentary “Work To Surf” by Dave Ogle which got many hoots and whistles. Twas A Great Opening Night!!! Thanks Josh and Duke’s Malibu.
Saturday Morning, August 29th 2009 we were blessed with the tail end of a south groundswell as well as the middle-end of Hurricane Ignacio. Our Malibu Legends Division Started the Day off strong and were followed by the Pro’s and then the Jr./Groms. HalfWay through the day we had our great friends at TheraSURF put on an unbelievable show. TheraSURF was born with a consortium of great friends caring for kids with special needs like Autism. Jimmy Gamboa is the heart of TheraSURF and has the help of many friends such as Ryan Conder, Skylar Peak, Leo Harrington, Josh Froley, Scott Caan, Kalani Robb, Jordy Tappis, John Baker, Dale Rhodes, and Pascal Stansfield. The waves were pumping and our boys gave the kids the rides of their lives. After their free surf MidDay Jimmy had Trophy’s made for all the kids and his presentation to them left us all in tears. Great Job Jimmy!
Sunday Morning, August 30th 2009 still lingered little surf from Ignacio with the every 10 minute pulse of 3 to 4 wave sets that were shoulder high and rippable. Although the surf was smaller it was still fun and the conditions were flawless. The Surfing Level was at an All Time High and it was great to see High Performance Shortboard Surfing at our beloved 1st Point Malibu.
